Montana Fatalities Update

In the pursuit of any goal, it is important to occasionally take stock of the target and how you are doing. If you are off on a few things, then you can make the appropriate course corrections along the way. This action can help you change your behavior to achieve the goal appropriately. For example, if your goal is to learn French, there are decisive moments where you will need to assess your progress. Researchers at Harvard University have pointed out that “effective assessment starts with a clear understanding of goals.” This understanding can help you focus on what matters.

One of the goals for all people of Montana is Vision Zero. This goal is a multi-pronged initiative ultimately trying to eliminate deaths and injuries on Montana highways and roads. Vision Zero incorporates multiple safety features trying to help all people in Montana drive more safely. For example, one of the critical elements is education. By providing a public information campaign during busy travel periods, the campaign hopes to help citizens understand how accidents happen and what each resident of Montana can do to prevent an accident. We here at The Advocates Law Firm heartily endorse this program. Every appropriate measure should be taken to ensure safety for the people of Montana.
As a result, we think it is critical, as mentioned above, to check up on this goal and see how we are doing. As of April 23, 2018, MDT reported the following statistics:

  • 29 deaths on Montana Roads. This number can be compared with 37 lost by this same time in 2017. This number is an improvement.
  • 11 of the deaths were caused by impaired driving. We have written previously about the problems of drunk driving in Montana which is the highest in the country.
  • 13 of the deaths were because of improper restraint. Wearing a seatbelt is crucial to staying safe while driving.
  • 27 of the deaths were motorists, and two deaths were pedestrians. So far, there haven’t been any deaths related to motorcycles and bicycles. These numbers can be low depending on the severity of the winter.

We are glad to see that the numbers are lower than at this same time last year; however, before we all over congratulate, it is important to realize that last year could have been unusual in the numbers of fatalities until late April. Plus, it is essential to understand that the ultimate goal is zero and we are still off. Zero is the only acceptable number.

If you, or someone you love, have been the victim of a car accident, contact The Advocates Law Firm. Often, accidents happen because someone was not behaving correctly. Their reckless behavior can place you under significant strain. We see our part in the Vision Zero goal as holding those accountable who have acted negligently. We can help you better understand your accident and what you can do about it. We have helped thousands of people just like you recover the damages they need. You deserve an Advocate!
