A Montana Deputy was killed while responding to emergency call
A Montana deputy was struck and killed by his own police car while attending a stranded motorist during Saturday night’s ice storm. The tragic incident occurred north of Bozeman, just west of Bridger Canyon Road. Deputy Jake Allmendinger, 31, from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s office, was responding to an emergency in the Bridger Mountains on Fairy Lake Road.
Deputy Allmendinger was attending a call with his partner Deputy Ryan Jern around 6 p.m., but before locating the stranded motorist on the mountain, their Chevy Tahoe started sliding backwards on the icy roadway.
As soon as the car started to slip, Deputy Allmendinger jumped out of the vehicle to presumably stop the car from sliding. Although this has not yet been confirmed, in his attempt to stop the car, he was dragged underneath the 5,000 lb. automobile.
While Ryan immediately tried to assist his partner, Deputy Allmendinger became trapped and died several hours later.
“It is with a heavy heart that the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office lets everyone know of the loss of one of our own last night,” he said.
Montana deputy Allmendinger was the father of three children and served as a 911 dispatcher for Gallatin County for over seven years. Prior to his career as a Montana deputy, he was a search and rescue volunteer for eight years and considered one of the nicest people in the entire community.
