The Most Dangerous Roads in New York
While millions of tourists visit The Empire State each year, New York is more than just the Big Apple. In fact, Upstate, which is considered anywhere north of the northern border of the Bronx, is notoriously known for having some of the most dangerous roads in New York.
Whether you’re a local driver or merely traveling through the state, it’s important to remember the dangers of driving in heavily populated areas. The car accident lawyers with The Advocates want to make the public aware of the most dangerous roads in New York and why you should avoid them.
The Top 5 Most Dangerous Roads and Highways in New York:
1. Taconic State Parkway
Surprisingly at the top of our list of dangerous roads in New York, is a highway that isn’t located in the big city. And yet, for nearly 104 miles, this deadly two-lane roadway is the most popular route for New Yorkers and travelers alike to leave the city and head north.
Not only is the Taconic State Parkway one of the most overcrowded highways in the state, it has a shockingly high number of twists and turns that have caused countless accidents over the years. You might even recall one of the most tragic incidents from 2009, when a minivan cruising in the wrong lane took the lives of eight people. Accidents are constantly occurring on this parkway and if you can avoid it and use another route, please do.
2. I-87 from New York City up to Montreal
Almost entirely parallel to the Taconic State Parkway, this deadly interstate has also made it onto our most dangerous roads in New York. Interstate 87 is a two-lane country highway that connects New York City and Montreal, Canada.
Despite being well-marked and usually in good repair, I-87 has seen more than 150 traffic fatalities in the last decade. Some of the most dangerous areas to travel are just actually outside of the city from Ramapo up to Albany. If you’re leaving NYC to hurry north, I-87 is not your safest route.
3. Niagara Falls Boulevard
Yet another highway outside of the Big Apple has made it onto our list of dangerous roads in New York. This short bit of roadway passes through , New York, and is only a three-mile-stretch of accident horror that stretches from Amherst to Tonawanda.
Known as the deadliest roadway in Western New York, Niagara Falls Boulevard is a compilation of confusing signage, hazardous crosswalks and a lack of middle medians, all of which have taken the lives of 11 pedestrians since 2011. With more than 35,000 daily commutes passing through, perhaps taking I-190 is a safer route instead.
4. Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County
While true New Yorkers navigate the city on foot, Long Island is an obvious exception, and a deadly one at that. With more than 7 million people living on this densely populated island, it should be no surprise that the Hempstead Turnpike might perhaps be the most dangerous roadway in New York City.
Between racing drivers, terrible road conditions and the lack of crosswalks, the Hempstead Turnpike has claimed the lives of pedestrians and motorists alike. If you can avoid this stretch of roadway, you should. But don’t ever jaywalk and interpret crosswalk signs quite literally.
5. Upper Broadway (Manhattan)
For pedestrians, there aren’t many roadways in New York City that are more hazardous than Broadway. The Big Apple alone attracts more than 60 million people each year, most of which are traveling through the city on foot.
Unfortunately, from 2010 to 2012, there were more than 400 pedestrians killed in New York, Broadway claiming more deaths than any other street during that time period. With crosswalks far too large to cross and aggressive New York drivers ready to hit the gas, it’s safe to say that Broadway is one of the most dangerous roads in New York and a risky route for pedestrians.
