Unsure of What to Do After a Dog Bite Accident?
Here’s a list of the most important steps to take following a dog bite.
1. Assess the damage
The first thing to be done after any accident is to check each person involved and see if they are okay. Is there blood? Is everyone breathing? Determine whether the injuries need emergency medical help. Call for an ambulance if you need one.
2. Get contact information
Before you leave the scene of the dog-bite accident, gather contact details for as many people involved as possible. Who owns the dog? Who was taking care of it at the time? Where there any witnesses? Write down the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all these people before you leave the scene.
3. Go to the hospital
Even if your injuries seem simple and superficial, always see a medical provider as soon after the dog bites as possible. It is important that animal bites are evaluated by a medical professional as soon as possible to prevent scarring and infection. A quick doctor’s visit also ensures the safety of the bite victim. Injuries can be worse than they appear. And if you end up asking the other party to compensate you for injuries sustained during the attack, the initial medical evaluation will become a vital piece of evidence used to determine how injured you were and what you need to be made whole.
